Never mind Chinese demand trends or labor issues in South Africa. For miners digging up the earth’s crust for iron ore or gold, the next big challenge may come from the depletion of another resource: water.

Hydrologist Peter Shepherd has warned that SA’s water resources are under strain and that new mines can only be brought on stream if we found innovative ways to meet our water needs.  Shepherd was encouraged by the steps taken by mines to conserve water, but said the price of water could double in the next five years as a reflection of its real cost to society.
